Going Gaia is moving!!

That’s right folks, after two and a half years of happy blogging with blogger everything is moving! Everything on this site has been shipped to http://athenia1939.wordpress.com/. This brings all four of my current blogs under one roof and allows for better access and navigation to all my wonderfully exciting thoughts and opinions.

I hope you’ll join me over at the new site and continue to flatter my sense of self worth.

Many Thanks,

Nakizo x

Dirty water

Building on yesterday’s monumental decision to water my houseplants in the cooler evenings I have today tried another one of the ‘top tips’ for becoming an eco-warrior. According to my little book the water used in boiling vegetables for dinner becomes infused with nutrients that are lost when we drain the saucepan. Instead it suggests saving this ‘vegetable water’ for use on plants. This reduces water use and boosts the daily diets of your plants.

I must admit I am a little wary of using this method with houseplants. I have visions of my room slowly beginning to smell of turnips as the dirty water festers in the bottom of the plant pot. But it is worth a shot and I’ve grabbed a plastic drinks bottle from the recycle bin, torn its label off, and shall now sacrifice it for this rather unglamorous purpose.

I managed to discretely drain my saucepan into the bottle without my housemates noticing. I have a bad feeling that my drive for greenness will see me plunge to new heights of weirdness and would rather not be caught having to explain my strange habits to friends. At least not yet.

Thirsty work

It has almost been a week now and still no entry on this blog. I appear to have immediately fallen victim to the hectic chaos of modern life. I have simply been too busy to consider this blog, let alone plan and implement any ‘green’ change to my lifestyle.

As it is I am burning the midnight oil to write this post in the full knowledge that I have to get up in less than five hours to go to work. In order to get the ball rolling however I have indeed taken my first ‘green’ step.

Going Gaia

So this is my first Gaia31 blog entry. I intend for this page to record, and help me in, my efforts to 'go green'. Some people keep a food diary when trying to diet. Well, this is my version.

I have thought about keeping such an account for a while now but have only recently been inspired to get round to doing it. On a whim I bought the book '1001 ways you can save the planet: Practical ideas to heal and change the world'. I have bought other books like it before and been rather unimpressed. But with a 1001 different ways - I thought I might come across at least some ideas that I had not heard of before. And I was right. As I went through I wrote down a list of those that I thought I could easily adopt and integrate into my every day life. There are around thirty or so things on that list.

Like many people I have long had an interest in evironmental issues and have been lucky enough to enjoy four years at university which provided me with ample opportunity to read around the subject and day dream about what might be. I do not for an instant think this blog will inspire anyone or that anything I can do will in itself 'save the world'.

Yet I have never been much of a defeatist and just because I individually can not do much to alter the bigger picture, it does not excuse me from at least trying.
