It has almost been a week now and still no entry on this blog. I appear to have immediately fallen victim to the hectic chaos of modern life. I have simply been too busy to consider this blog, let alone plan and implement any ‘green’ change to my lifestyle. As it is I am burning the midnight oil to write this post in the full knowledge that I have to get up in less than five hours to go to work. In order to get the ball rolling however I have indeed taken my first ‘green’ step.

I have watered my plants at night. A while ago I decided to brighten up my bedroom by purchasing a couple of houseplants. I thought they would look good and hopefully do something to improve the air quality in my room. This is not to suggest that the air in my room is often stale and in need of filtering, but I had read something a long time ago that suggested that plants can help remove nasty chemicals from the air. And the thought of two little oxygen factories in my room cheered me greatly, although I am aware that the science doesn’t quite support that claim, and besides, any benefits at all would be minute. Although if Hugh Grant is to be believed in his film ‘Music and Lyrics’ they can greatly increase your luck with the ladies. So here’s hoping.
Putting the dubious benefits of houseplants aside for a moment it is clear that these two plants, a Peace Lilly and some sort of Christmas tree looking variety of Wilma, seem to have an insatiable thirst for water. On a regular basis they both do an excellent job of putting on droopy, sad faces as a reminder to me that I am a terrible parent. I do water them from time to time, but never with any regularity, often drowning them continuously for a day or two, and then leaving them dry for weeks. In ‘my little book of world changing ideas’ it suggests watering garden plants in the evenings and never during the day. To do otherwise would of course dramatically reduce the effectiveness of the water used. In sunlight the water would quickly evaporate into the air, rather than linger in the ground to be used by the plant. So there you have it.
I watered my plants this evening, in the dark. And I intend to do the same thing tomorrow, and indeed every evening from on. Hopefully forming a habit of little and often, and at night, will reduce the overall water I use for my plants, and boost their health no end.
It is the smallest of small steps I could take, but it’s a start.
