Dirty water

Building on yesterday’s monumental decision to water my houseplants in the cooler evenings I have today tried another one of the ‘top tips’ for becoming an eco-warrior. According to my little book the water used in boiling vegetables for dinner becomes infused with nutrients that are lost when we drain the saucepan. Instead it suggests saving this ‘vegetable water’ for use on plants. This reduces water use and boosts the daily diets of your plants.

I must admit I am a little wary of using this method with houseplants. I have visions of my room slowly beginning to smell of turnips as the dirty water festers in the bottom of the plant pot. But it is worth a shot and I’ve grabbed a plastic drinks bottle from the recycle bin, torn its label off, and shall now sacrifice it for this rather unglamorous purpose.

I managed to discretely drain my saucepan into the bottle without my housemates noticing. I have a bad feeling that my drive for greenness will see me plunge to new heights of weirdness and would rather not be caught having to explain my strange habits to friends. At least not yet.
